Introduction

Prakruti and Vikruti Ayurveda form the two pillars of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is the science of holistic healing that is based on three fundamental principles that govern it: Nature of a person’s constitution, Nature of Imbalance, and the Nature of Medicine. While allopathic medicine has one medicine that is designated to cure a particular disease, Ayurveda has different treatments because as per this science, each person is different, and so is their body constitution.

Two concepts are given immense importance in Ayurveda– Prakruti (a person’s constitution_ and Vikruti (state of the doshas). While Prakruti is the inherent balance of the doshas at the time of a person’s creation, Vikruti is the imbalance of doshas that a person experiences during their lifetime.

Concept of Vikruti

The patterns present throughout an individual’s course of life indicate their Prakruti; what is expressed in the present indicates their Vikruti. Vikruti is the symptoms of a disease that arises in an individual due to disturbances in the ratio of the three doshas –Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The ratio of these tridoshas can increase or decrease over time due to age, climate, seasons, the weather change or lifestyle. According to Ayurveda, an imbalance in these ratios results in diseases and disorders.

In Ayurveda, assessing a person’s Vikruti is the first step in diagnosing the condition that the person is suffering from. Since Vikruti of a person is better described as whatever dosha tendencies they are showing in the present, it is not a constant. A person’s vikruti changes from season to season, in different climates, at different times during the year.

7 Areas of Health that Determine Vikruti

But, how does one identify the gap between a balanced and a disturbed state of health? This is done by Vikruti Ayurveda. Ayurvedic practitioners perform a personalise health evaluation that involves determining an individual’s dosha imbalance by assessing the following 7 areas of health:

  1. Mood
  2. Tongue
  3. Taste
  4. Appetite
  5. Stools
  6. Energy Levels
  7. Pain

Signs and symptoms affecting each of these areas indicate whether an individual has a Vata, Pitta, or Kapha imbalance that is causing the Vikruti.

Can a person have a constitution that is different from their vikruti?

Irrespective of a person’s Prakruti, they can suffer from a dosha imbalance as the environment creates these that the individual is in. An Ayurvedic practitioner will always study an individual’s Prakruti, Vikruti, the relation between them and the dosha imbalance. Ayurvedic practitioners determine what an individual’s original Prakruti is and restore their Vikruti.

Takeaway

Since Ayurveda delves into the depths to understand a person’s inherent constitution and restore the body’s natural balance, it is a complete preventive system. With timely intervention, the Ayurvedic system is a great preventative measure before the occurrence of an illness. If your Vikruti is the problem, your Prakruti sheds light on how to restore normalcy. To learn more about Prakruti, Vikruti and Ayurvedic solutions for different disorders, visit miboso.life.
